The Centre for Early Modern Studies

Established in 2007, the Centre for Early Modern Studies capitalises on the exceptional concentration of scholars of the early modern era based at the University of Exeter. Formally located within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, it provides a focus for intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary activity between academic staff and postgraduate students of the Departments of History, English, Drama, and Modern Languages.

Research

Colleagues involved in the Centre are engaged in research on all aspects of the period between c.1500 and 1800 and expertise spreads from Britain and Europe to the Middle East and North America. Key areas of activity include: religious culture; social and economic relations; political and intellectual thought; gender and sexuality; space, landscape and national identities; the history of the book; theatre and performance.

‘The Burthen of the Mortal Body’: Life, Death, Sickness and Health in the Early Modern Period
This conference seeks to bring together postgraduates working on aspects of the lifecycle, health and the body in the early modern period (c.1500-1800). We hope to draw together a diverse range of researchers from the fields of medical, social and cultural history, and extend our invitation to those working in other historical sub-disciplines, as well as to researchers in related fields such as theology, literature and art history.
