Centre for Maritime Historical Studies
The Centre was the first of its kind in a British university.
It can call on a wide range of expertise in the University in maritime
historical studies and seeks to promote research into economic,
social, political, naval and environmental aspects of the British
maritime past from the earliest times to the present day, drawing
also on European and international experience.
Awards
The Centre for Maritime Historical Studies and the Institute of Cornish Studies have won an award to develop an innovative project in Cornwall that uses the past to assist the present. £12,000 has been awarded for an ERDF Convergence Funding Knowledge Transfer Fellowship. This is for a pilot project to examine the records of the Fowey Harbour Commissioners and establish how they can be used to promote the port commercially. The Commissioners approached Dr Helen Doe for assistance as the port, which has historically been a significant exporting port, needs to diversify more into the cruise and leisure sectors. Dr Doe will be working on this together with Professor Philip Payton with a view to making a larger application for an AHRC Knowledge Transfer Fellowship.
