Sustainable Development
The Ashford's Integrated Alternatives project has been exploring the feasibility of a more integrated urban utility service provision as a way to improve the sustainability of urban development.  The consortium, led by the University of Exeter, has been looking at technology options, the role of stakeholders in decision-making, and new business models.  They have been tackling the issues of scale, integration and delivery in an attempt to reduce resource use, limit emissions, manage innovation and improve the quality of life in a case study set in Ashford, Kent.

Dr Albert Chen and Professor Slobodan Djordjevic have been awarded the ERES (European Real Estate Society) / JPR (Journal of Property Research) Award 2011 for Best Paper in Real Estate Economics. They share a prize of €1,000 with Dr Yu Chen (leading co-author) and Professor Gwilym Pryce from University of Glasgow and Professor Bernard Fingleton from University of Cambridge. The paper "Implications of rising flood risk for residential real estate prices and the location of employment" was presented at the 18th ERES Conference held in Eindhoven in June 2011 and will be published in the Routledge Journal of Property Research.
 
David Butler appointed chair of international committee PDF print email

Congratulations to Professor David Butler for being elected chair of the Joint Committee on Urban Drainage (JCUD) for the next three years.   This international committee has two parent bodies – the International Water Association and the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and  strives to maintain its long-standing broad international recognition as a prominent contributor to the advancement of the scientific knowledge in the field of urban drainage. It considers its activities in the wider context of urban water systems, with the ambition of developing and promoting a sustainable and integrated urban water management (http://www.jcud.org/).

The  recent  CCWI2011 Conference,  was attended by over 230 delegates more than half of  whom came from 26 countries around the world.  Many  exciting  new  research findings  were presented during the three-day event. Members of the Centre for Water Systems presented a number of papers, but two caught not only imagination of the  delegates  present  at the conference  but also of the world’s news media. One deals with using Artificial Intelligence technologies to detect leaks in water distribution networks and the other explains how gaming technology (graphical processing units) can be used to model flooding  rapidly .
