Sport and Exercise Physiology
This resource is managed by the School of Sport and Health Sciences in the University of Exeter. These webpages provide information of research activities within the school's sport and exercise physiology group, and an educational database of related material.
Educational classes
If you are interested in arranging an educational visit for a school or college, we are happy to accommodate. We have experience in running classes for A level, BTEC, GCSE and foundation d egree students. These classes support practical aspects of these courses, introduce a university environment to prospective undergraduates. All classes are very hands-on and competitively priced. Most classes are health and/or exercise physiology oriented, although we can organise biomechanics and sports psychology seminars. For further information, please contact Jamie Blackwell.

Heat Acclimation for Triathlete
Flora Duffy represented Bermuda in the women's triathlon at the Olympic games in Beijing. In preparation for the event, she had undertaken physiological testing at the school and followed a program of acclimating to a hot and humid environment in our heat chamber. Professor Andrew Jones and Jamie Blackwell teamed up with local coach Rich Brady to provide physiological support.

Marathon des Sables Support
Congratulations to Paul Ruff, who successfully completed the Marathon des Sables - a grueling 6 day marathon in the Sahara desert covering 243 km in over 40 degree heat!
Paul spent 10 sessions over consecutive days cycling in our heat chamber in order to prepare for the event. Jamie Blackwell presided over his torture, and hopes the adaptations to Paul's physiology contributed to his performance.

Successful BASES workshop in SSHS

Exeter hosted a BASES workshop, 'Oxygen Uptake Kinetics: A Practical Approach', on the 20th and 21st of April. Key lectures from Professors Andy Jones and David Poole were supported with practical sessions with Dr Daryl Wilkerson, Dr Mark Burnley, Fred DiMenna and Anni Vanhatalo
New Laboratories

A new extension to the Baring Court laboratories provides 3 new physiology labs, a Bod Pod suite and 3 staff offices. These are situated in the Children's Health and Exercise Research Centre.
BASES accreditation
SSHS has achieved BASES re-accreditation for research and scientific support, thanks to lab directors Prof Andrew Jones and Dr Joanne Welsman
