CitizenshipPast
|
Members of The Internet Development, Design and Accessibility group at the ILRT (University of Bristol) have recently completed a project,
CitizenshipPast, dealing with British citizenship and history. Their role has been to undertake technical site development and to co-ordinate the creation of learning materials for school children between the ages of 10-16.
‘CitizenshipPast - Living in the Past, Learning for the Future’ is a New Opportunities Fund (NOF)-funded project uncovering over 300 years of official and unofficial British social history, from the centre of power to the margins of society. It provides a window into our history, enabling us to learn about citizenship today from the messages of the past.
The three partners showcased through this site are:
- The ‘British Official Publications Collaborative Reader Information Service’
(BOPCRIS), whose digitised publications currently cover the period 1688 to 1995
- ‘From History to Herstory’, a major and unique project in women's history, examining, through the lives and organisations of Yorkshire women, the role women have played in history
- ‘Hidden Lives Revealed’, which provides an intriguing encounter with children in the care of The Children's Society in late Victorian and early 20th century Britain
‘BOPCRIS’ worksheets and activities created from genuine 19th and 20th century government papers provide school children with a basic understanding of the ways in which scientific discovery has changed our lives. They can also see how individuals and society have responded to environmental issues in the past and how we might learn from these experiences.
‘From History to Herstory’ learning resources offer an insight, based on real case notes, into life in a Victorian asylum and also explore and women’s reaction and contribution to war ranging from Amy Johnson to pacifism.
‘Hidden Lives Revealed’ learning materials enable school children today to explore how destitute and sometimes homeless waifs in Victorian and Edwardian times, rescued by The Children's Society, were given the chance of a family life, schooling and preparation for work.
