Programmes of Study

Staff from the Centre for Medical History are involved in several undergraduate programmes within the College of Humanities, and teach on a variety of modules.

The Centre also runs a modular Masters course in Medical History, for which a number of Centre staff teach modules.

Staff from the Centre are supervising PhD students in a range of different topics including:

• Aphrodisiacs in early modern England
• Cross-dressing women in 18th/19th century Britain
• Editing Galen on Theriac
• Medical perspectives on sexual consent
• The Formation of Identity in early modern medical discourse
• The history of cancer

There are many areas of research for which academics from the Centre would be willing to provide supervision.  These include:

• English medical history, 1500 - 1800
• Environment & medicine in the Modern period
• Gender & the family
• Occupational health & industrial diseases
• History of psychiatry
• History of sex and sexuality
• History of stress
