About the Centre for Medieval Studies
The University of Exeter has a long and distinguished tradition in the field of Medieval Studies. Staff expertise covers a wide range of disciplines, including Archaeology, History, Islamic Studies, Law, Music, Theology and the literatures of England, France, Germany, Italy and the Iberian Peninsula. In 1998, the Exeter Centre for Medieval Studies was established in order to encourage regular academic contact between medievalists in the University and elsewhere, to promote interdisciplinary approaches to the medieval period and to act as a forum for postgraduate teaching and research. Today, the Centre is a thriving academic community, home to numerous full-time staff and honorary research fellows, as well as a large and growing postgraduate community drawn from both the UK and abroad. Members of the Centre have attracted a number of large grants from research councils and charitable organisations for a variety of projects, including several interdisciplinary ones, and are involved in collaboration with other academics from the UK, EU and the rest of the world. The Centre organises an annual research seminar series and has played host to numerous international conferences. Every year, under the auspices of the Nicholas Orme Lecture in Medieval History, a leading international scholar is also invited to visit Exeter to lecture and meet staff and students. Postgraduates run their own Medieval Studies reading group and they take part in an annual symposium, at which they have an opportunity to share their latest research findings in a lively and supportive forum.
