The Centre for the Study of the Christian Church exists to promote the scholarly study of the Christian Church. It is a response to widespread interest among laity, clergy and the informed public in the nature of the Church, its unity, ministry and mission. The Centre is ecumenical and interdisciplinary.

It provides taught courses on ecclesiology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels  of the . It promotes enquiry and discussion through the Richard Hooker Lectures and study days, the Ecclesiology Seminar in the University, and twice-yearly consultations at St. George's House, Windsor Castle. The Centre undertakes academic research,. on aspects of the Church, leading to higher degrees of the University of Exeter. 

Dr Paul Avis welcomes enquiries about opportunities to engage in research under his supervision on a range of ecclesiological topics.  Research proposals must also be approved by the  Department of Theology of the University of Exeter.  

The Centre brings together several institutions with a common aim: the University of Exeter, Exeter Cathedral, the South West Ministry Training Course, the University College of St. Mark and St. John, the Adult Training Programme of the Diocese of Exeter and St. George's House, Windsor Castle. The Centre is currently sponsored by the St Luke's College Foundation, Exeter Cathedral and the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Centre welcomes enquiries about its work.
