Postgraduate Research


The Earth Resources Centre provides postgraduate training and research opportunities in the earth sciences and related environmental fields. Students register for MPhil and PhD degrees, according to background and qualifications.

Funding would normally be sought by the applicant, by way of public authority grants, employers, European Community, UN, private funding, etc. Overseas students are advised to seek the guidance of the British Council.

We have good laboratory facilities and excellent technical support for postgraduates.

Current research activities include:

  • Hydrogeology of sandstone aquifers
  • Sedimentary geochemistry
  • Environmental radioactivity
  • Air quality
  • Water quality
  • Radionuclide retardation by granites
  • Landslide hazard assessment
  • Soil gas geochemistry
  • Waste disposal
