Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies
EXCEPS is dedicated to the inter-disciplinary study of ethno-politics. We undertake and promote advanced empirical and theoretical research in the broad field of ethno-politics and seek to integrate the methodologies and approaches of a wide range of disciplines within our activities. More about EXCEPS.
Why research Ethno-Politics?
Hardly a day goes by without some seeming manifestation of ethnicity in political and social life being reported on. Conflict situations of Darfur, Iraq, and Palestine; new state formation in the Balkans; issues of multi-culturalism and security in Western cities; and the re-interpretation of historical memories and myths in places as far apart as Cornwall and Central Asia all point to the salience of ethnicity as a critical factor in today's complex world. In short, we seek to problematize notions of ethnicity and identity, and explore why political and social life is affected by agendas and aspirations defined by 'ethnicity' or the sense of belonging to a particular community, and how this ethno-political outlook (whether of actors or observers) affects societies.
