The founding of this centre is inspired by the growing importance of Turkey as a major political and cultural player in the modern world. Exeter Turkish Studies combines resources and experience from several of Exeter University’s Academic Schools to provide study of Turkey over a wide disciplinary range and with a deep historical perspective. There is extensive expertise and interest in Turkish Studies at Exeter, in Ancient History and Archaeology, Theology and Religious Studies, Literary and Cultural Studies, Modern History and Politics, Business Studies and Economics, and Environmental Science.
It is based in the College of Humanities and in the College of Social Science and International Studies, incorporating the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies. ExTS also has links to other Colleges in the University, including the Business school with major participation from the School of Languages and Literature, the Business School, and the School of Geography, Earth Sciences and Archaeology.
Exeter Turkish Studies has identified five areas of research which will provide the framework for its activities.
